The first four books of the New Testament, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, are called Gospels. The word gospel means “good news” and that is exactly what these four books share. The gospel is the message about the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ was the answer to Israel’s sin problem. Jesus Christ is the answer to our sin problem. The sacrifice of Himself that Jesus offered on the cross paid the way for a brand new opportunity to fellowship with God. Because of Jesus, believers today no longer must go through a priest to provide salvation, Jesus did that once for all.
The story of Jesus’ life and ministry gives example to believers of ways we can pattern our lives and live like Jesus did. Parables Jesus used are analogies that guide believers to live in ways that honor God. Jesus Himself preached the gospel by revealing the salvation that would come through faith in Him.
Studies in the Books of The Gospels guide kids to see the life of Jesus as an example to follow. The words Jesus taught and His actions give tangible ways after which girls and boys can pattern their lives. The truth taught in these four books about Jesus Christ and the sacrifice He made for all people, when believed and trusted, brings salvation. While other books by other New Testament authors preach the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ, these four books are set aside to share specifically about Jesus life, ministry, death and resurrection. Other New Testament writers also shared truths of Jesus, but that is a story for the Letters genre later.
