December is a great time to have a gospel conversation – Jesus’s birth is being celebrated all month long! But that doesn’t make it easy exactly to strike up a conversation about Him or casually work Him in to your current discussion. Here’s the good news: sharing the gospel doesn’t have to be lengthy or require you to know everything there is to know about the Bible. In fact, knowing one verse and being able to discuss it is a solid foundation for sharing the gospel. John 3:16 is a great option for this kind of evangelism; Romans 6:23 is another good one.
Sharing just one verse with someone can absolutely accomplish a lot! Here’s why:
Sharing one verse keeps the conversation focused. It can be hard to know where to begin, and we can easily find ourselves trying to explain everything about what it means to follow Him. Sharing just a verse can prevent a wandering conversation that hits the highlights of Genesis to Revelation. All of Scripture is certainly important, but having a focus can make it easier know what to say.
Sharing one verse explains the gospel in a succinct way. God has given us His Word, the Holy Spirit, and other believers to help us understand what it means to be Christian. It’s a joy to learn more about what it looks like to follow Him day in and day out. But, at its core, the gospel isn’t complicated. And, we can help others know that when we discuss it using just one verse.
Sharing one verse allows you to talk about the gospel in any context. You never know when you might get an opportunity to share about Jesus. Possibly you’d have plenty of uninterrupted time to dive into Scripture, but it’s more likely that your opportunity will have time constraints. Sharing one verse allows you to quickly get to the good news in any environment and encounter.
The good news is simply this: Jesus alone can save us from a life of sin and its consequences. He can give eternal and abundant life! Don’t let your fears or hesitations keep you from telling others about Jesus. All you need is a verse.
