Studies show that many kids today are not proficient in biblical literacy. Biblical literacy is the ability to use and understand God’s Word. Explore the Bible Kids guides leaders to focus on helping kids know and understand God’s Word. As a leader, it is important for you to evaluate the methods you are using and how effective those have been with the girls and boys you lead.
Biblical literacy is greatly increased by consistent, age-appropriate use of Bible skills. Explore the Bible Kids has provided a framework to guide consistent use of Bible skills with the Bible Skills for Kids booklet and poster. This resource provides Bible skill goals in easy-to-navigate, age-appropriate statements. This resource can be a helpful tool to help you evaluate your kids’ journey toward biblical literacy.
The summer months are the perfect time to evaluate the skills you have been teaching and see what did and didn’t work for you. Gather your leaders and think about what skills you were emphasizing this year as you taught. How well did the boys and girls in your group learn those skills? Are there skills you didn’t use that you might want to implement next time?
As you begin your evaluation think about these few things:
- Remember, even though the kids in your group may be the same age, they might be in different places in their Bible knowledge. Try to identify where each kid might be and what he might need to move forward.
- Was there a particular way of teaching Bible skills that made a greater impact on your group, and how can you supplement your teaching with that next year?
- Are there methods you wished you had used that you didn’t and how can you incorporate those methods into your teaching the next year?
- Are there songs or other unique learning tools that you can use to help build biblical literacy?
No matter the skills of your kids, consistent emphasis on handling God’s Word will go a long way to make confident, life-long learners and users of God’s Word. Foster a love for God’s Word through your own personal Bible study, and work alongside the girls and boys you lead to build strong Bible skills.
