News Story Summary
Emma Earhart excelled in school, receiving a high school diploma and an associate’s degree at 15 years old. She enrolled in the University of North Texas at the age of 16. When her daughter started college, Kathy Earhart, Emma’s mom, said to herself, Okay, if she can do this, I can do this. So, inspired by her daughter’s ambition, 37-year-old Kathy enrolled in the same college. Now they are studying together in the same classes. Emma hopes to go to medical school and become a surgeon. Kathy hopes to go to medical school, too, but to be a dermatologist.

Focus Attention
To supplement the Ask idea in Focus Attention, share the news story summary. Explain that the norm is that kids imitate their parents, but in this case, a mom has imitated her daughter. Ask: In what ways are Emma and Kathy imitating each other? What does this say about the character of Kathy, Emma’s mom? Complete the step as written.
Challenge
To supplement the Review idea in Summarize and Challenge, remind group members of the news story summary. Explain that neither Kathy nor Emma seemed to be bothered that they were attending college together. Ask: How are Emma and Kathy showing love toward each other? What prevents us from imitating the love of God and demonstrating it to others? Complete the step as written.
