Suggested Week of Use: September 29, 2019
Core Passages: Ephesians 3:1-13
News Story Summary
On September 16 of this year, Nabisco introduced a new Mystery Oreo. Packages can be purchased at various retailers with packaging simply identifying the flavor as a mystery. People wishing to guess the flavor can enter their guess, once daily, at MysteryOREO.com with the hope of winning a prize of $50,000. The initial announcement include the following clue: “History is divided on how this came to exist. A shepherd? A sailor? There’s no easy fix.” The contest will end November 4 with Nabisco unveiling a new clue each Monday during the contest. The flavor and prize winner will be announced by November 19, 2019.

Focus Attention
To replace the Introduce idea under Focus Attention, share the news story summary. Explain that Nabisco is creating conversation with consumers by keeping the flavor a secret. Ask: What is so intriguing about a mystery cookie flavor? What appeals to you (or doesn’t appeal to you) about not knowing the flavor? Complete the step as written.
Challenge
To replace the Discuss idea under Summarize and Challenge, begin by reminding the group of the news summary. Ask: What emotions do you think will be evoked once the 2019 mystery Oreo flavor is revealed? How should we feel because the mystery of the gospel has been revealed to us? Explain that it is our responsibility and our privilege to share this mystery with the unchurched. Complete the step as written.

You have to be kidding, this will not be apart of the lesson that I am teaching. Opening with a short statement but this is of no insight for the lesson. No thanks, this isn’t for me.
Dwayne McCrary says
Char,
Thank you for taking the time to comment on this idea. The idea works with the plans provided in the Leader Guide which deals with helping people voice their understanding of the term “mystery” which opens the door to discuss Paul’s use of the term in Ephesians 3. Blessings.

I love this idea. I just sent my husband to pick up a package of the cookies to use during the lesson. Who doesn’t enjoy a cookie? Maybe the members will enjoy tasting the cookie too and trying to determine the flavor. It creates immediate involvement with the lesson. It’s that ice breaker that engages the learner so that they are ready to transition into the lesson. Thanks for this idea!
