Since introducing the Daily Discipleship Guide in 2017 as an alternative to the Personal Study Guide, we have learned a great deal from church feedback and our own experience leading groups. The value of daily Bible engagement, coordination between group study, individual study, and accountability groups have all been affirmed. However, there were some things that needed attention, including the Talk It Out section. In response, we went back to the drawing board to reimagine these features.
The goal from day one of the Talk It Out feature was to provide some simple questions that could be used by smaller groups that met during the week. These smaller groups, microgroups, of three or four people come together weekly to encourage, share, and sharpen each other. These are usually made up of people of the same gender, smaller on purpose, can meet almost anywhere, and work to accommodate each other’s schedules. The challenge is having a direction for the regular gathering that goes beyond prayer needs and reactions to the news, thus the three questions connected to the ongoing group’s lesson.
Most groups needed more than three questions, so we expanded the Talk It Out section beginning in the Fall of 2022. Talk It Out features still include some questions for discussion but also give some commentary to help keep the focus on God’s Word. The comments and activities suggested are built around the weekly memory verse, giving people insight into the verse that goes beyond what was done in the group time or daily explorations, as well as ideas for holding each other accountable for memorizing each weekly verse.
Some married couples may choose to use the Talk It Out section as a part of their weekly routine.
This expanded approach will help members of the microgroup share what God has been teaching them through the group time and their personal daily Bible study while working to memorize a Bible verse as a group.
