Some students may focus on the passages that indicate that when we pray and ask God for something, He will give it. We know the “name it and claim it” teachings of some groups in the Church. How might we explain that, in this context, the asking is for what we need to bear fruit in ourselves and to attract others to Jesus.

Good question. It’s always helpful to point learners to the full context of the verse. In John 15:16, Jesus’s words relate to His appointing them to go and bear fruit. Jesus is reminding them that they will have all the resources needed to complete this task, and they are available through prayer. What they needed, the Father would provide. A prayer offered in Jesus’s name will reflect His character and mission.
