Podcast very helpful in preparing to teach Sunday’s lesson. Thank you Amber and Mike. Good questions and discussion.
Do not believe “happy” and “blessed” mean the same thing. Is the scripture really this ambiguous?
Great question. Our Leader Guide shares this: This expression, “How happy” (v. 1), has also been translated as “blessed” (ESV, NIV, KJV) or “Oh, the joys” (NLT). It conveys the happy result of choosing to nourish a fruitful relationship with God. Even though the English translations may be different, all of them underscore the same fulfilling result of making such a wise choice. When Jesus began His instruction in the Sermon on the Mount, He used a similar expression. With the Beatitudes, He affirmed the spiritual blessing of true happiness that accompanies a believer’s decision to follow Him (Matt. 5:3-12).
