Core Passages: Ephesians 5:15-21
News Story Summary
After following a GPS, two men and a dog had to be rescued last month from a river by North Yorkshire rescue teams in the town of Ripon (England). In the driver’s defense, the GPS was correct. The paved ford across the River Skell that is typically covered with just a few inches of water was flooded due to heavy rains. However, the driver ignored posted signs warning that the ford may be impassable due to heavy rains. The fire and rescue manager said he had only one question for the driver: “Why did you attempt this?” The response was that the SatNav (GPS) said this way.

To supplement the Explain idea in Focus Attention, share the news story summary. Ask: Why do you think the driver chose to trust his GPS, despite the warning? Explain that in this situation, neither a map nor an experienced guide was available. Only a GPS and the driver’s wisdom were accessible. Complete the step as written.
Summarize and Challenge
To supplement the Review idea in Summarize and Challenge, remind the group of the news story summary. Explain that the driver’s unwise decision to follow a GPS across a dangerous ford endangered his life, a friend, and a dog. Ask: What difference would it have made if the danger of crossing the ford had been communicated in some other way? What warning should be posted when believers don’t choose to follow the Holy Spirit? Complete the step as written.
